twibble mobile

twibble mobile is a fast and feature rich micro blogging client for Java enabled smartphones including Nokia, Blackberry, and SonyEricsson. It supports video, pictures, GPS, Search, and more for twitter and twitter compatible servers.

Current version is 1.0.3 (11 OCT 2009). Download instructions

After installation set the application premissions for twibble as described in this post. If you cannot connect to twitter when running the application please change Options->Server API Root to ‘http://twitter.com’ or ‘https://twitter.com’.

There is no expiration date any more! twibble mobile automatically checks if a new version is available and displays a menu item for easy upgrading. If you like twibble mobile please consider to activate your account.
If you have any problems running twibble please also check the FAQ.

Older versions are here.

twibble’s feature list include

  • tweets, replies and direct messages are displayed in separate views (flip with right/left keys or ’space’. ‘wipe’ right/left on touch screen devices)
  • fully integrated twitter search with automatic refresh of result list (new in 0.9.14)
  • load tweets on demand when scrolling down the tweet list
  • send videos and photos to Mobypicture or twitpic (pics only). In case of Mobypicture you can even geocode your photo or video with GPS coordinates! This is an example with a picture and this with a video (watch the map on the right). Read this post how it works.
  • automatic notification of new versions (new in 0.9.26)
  • Image browser to select pics you want to sent to twitpic/Moby new in 0.9.15/16
  • search twitter for users or hashtags directly from a tweet
  • re-tweet (forward) of tweets. With a few clicks you can re-send a tweet you received without re-typing the message.
  • quick @replies
  • replies are properly linked to the original tweet (“in reply to”)
  • follow/unfollow other twitter users directly from a tweet
  • mark tweets as favorites: Useful on the road when you want to mark a tweet for later reading.
  • support for ssl to make the transmission more secure
  • full support for public or private identi.ca/laconi.ca instances
  • full screen mode with good readability
  • (Optionally) display avatar pics, pics are automatically resized depending on the screen size of your phone.
  • auto refresh: retrieve tweets automatically after a given time period. Or retrieve tweets manually by pressing ‘*’
  • fast and ressource saving implementation
  • On most devices you can run twibble in the background.
  • notifications: configure twibble to vibrate if new tweets arrive.
  • keyboard shortcuts: to access the most important functions use the keyboard shortcuts.
  • themes: twibble comes with a couple of different themes you can chose from.
  • optimized to generate as little data traffic as possible. Only new tweets are fetched to reduce data traffic.
  • open web links contained in a tweet (via phone browser).

In addtion twibble mobile can add your position to a tweet (but only if you want!). It can even make use of the built-in GPS if available. If twibble acquires a GPS position (“Start GPS” in the location sub menu) it will be displayed near the title which can be added to a tweet. Your phone must support the Java Location API (JSR-179) in order to use GPS. The position can be displayed on the mobile device and on the desktop in Google maps or Google Earth, e.g. via the twibble API.

Download and install

twibble mobilePlease read the disclaimer before installing or using the software.
To install make sure your phone supports Java (MIDP2.0/CLDC 1.1 – you should be ok with a current smartphone or a Blackberry with OS > 4.5) and ensure your phone’s Internet network settings (APN on Blackberry) are correct. From your phone follow this link: http://m.twibble.de and download the software. The jar size is less than 100kB. Note, sometimes the installation of a Java (MIDP) application over an older one does not work properly. In that case, un-install the old version, reboot your phone and install the new one. Once installed, enter your twitter credentials in the options dialog.

Please also check our FAQ.

Keyboard shortcuts

Use the arrow or page up/down keys to navigate in the tweet list. twibble also has some shortcuts for numeric and qwerty keyboards (List describes twibble Version 0.9.24):

  • [*] or [u]: Fetch new tweets (use this to manually update your tweets. Only new tweets will be fetched and inserted to the current list)
  • [#] or [s]: search
  • [0]: Options dialog
  • [1] or [t]: send a tweet
  • [2]: direct message
  • [3] or [r]: @-reply to selected screen name

Thx, works just fine with my N95!

thanks, this app is y very nice!

3 Tullis // Mar 27, 2008 at 18:45

The GPS support does not seem to work on my SonyEricsson K850.

I am using an external Holux GPSlim 236 and the device is functioning correctly.

There is no “Start GPS” in the menu at all.

I have done the following to try and make it appear:
Installed the signed app (version 0.5.0).
Checked the permissions on the app and they are all relaxed.
Entered my user/pass and checked that other aspects of twibble work correctly.

Looking forward to when it works.
Many thanks.

4 thilo // Mar 27, 2008 at 23:41

@Tullis Does the K850 support the Java Location API (JSR179)? If not you cannot use GPS with twibble yet, I’m afraid …

5 Tullis // Mar 28, 2008 at 16:18

Dah! I really thought it did, but I am proven wrong.
The J8 platform supports it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Java_Platform
But the phone itself doesn’t
http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/products/phonegallery/k850/p_k850.jsp
I guess all of the other GPS enabled applications are just using JSR-82

Thanks anyway.

Works great

8 Ben // Apr 6, 2008 at 18:10

Funktioniert das auch mit dem E65 ?

LG

9 thilo // Apr 6, 2008 at 23:10

@Ben I haven’t tried it myself but from what I read in the spec the E65 supports MIDP2.0/CLDC1.1. Should be ok to run twibble.

10 Adam // Apr 10, 2008 at 11:12

Have just installed the new version on my N96 8GB, it works really well and is much improved upon the older version! Am very impressed! Thanks for the service!

The best twitter client I’ve seen in my life, probably one of the best there ever will be!!!!!!!!!

12 Malte // Apr 17, 2008 at 13:28

I get an “Content Blocked” Error, when I try to twibble s.th. and i don’t get any posts from my friends. What is the problem ? I have an mobile internet flat by vodafone in germany.

13 beatus // Apr 19, 2008 at 15:08

Works fine in Switzerland with Swisscom. How do I configure twibble to update my position automatic (eg. every 30 minutes) in twitter, so somebody can view it on twittervision/google maps?

14 Ralf // Apr 19, 2008 at 15:53

Wenn Twibble Mobile bald auch Twitpic unterstützen würde wär das echt super! Ansonsten bin ich ein sehr zufriedener Twibble Bentüzter – Kompliment.

15 thilo // Apr 19, 2008 at 17:55

@Malte I’m not on on Vodafone but I guess it’s has to do with Vodafone blocking sites. Can you access other sites (e.g. twitter.com)? You could try to enable/disable SSL in the twibble options to see if it makes any difference.

16 thilo // Apr 19, 2008 at 17:59

@beatus I was also thinking about adding some sort of “auto twibble” (tracking) feature. It problably does not make much sense for regular twitter users (as your followers may get annoyed very quickly) but in other cases it might be a very useful feature!

17 thilo // Apr 19, 2008 at 18:07

@Ralf Pictures will be a feature of a future twibble (hopfully soon!). I am not sure what people would like most: Sending the pictures to twitpic, flickr, local at twibble, …? Or may be they don’t care at all?

18 Ralf // Apr 27, 2008 at 21:42

@thilo: twitpic support would be cool, no extra registration needed, easy to use. obviously flickr integration would be awsome. looking forward to it!

19 eske // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:55

installed on sony ericsson p1i.
works fine except for message “certificate could not be verified .
do you want to accept the cert and proceed?” every time it checks for new twitters.
meaning automaticly checking every X minutes won’t work
and
urls aren’t hightlighted so i cant click to open in browser.
am i doing something wrong here?

20 Sven // May 1, 2008 at 18:30

Installation on my Nokia 9300i (http://www.nokia.de/A4419221) was successful but afterwards the application does not start. The phone supports Java MIDP 2.0. Any idea?

21 Thomas // May 3, 2008 at 00:40

Just installed it on my Nokia 6280 and it work really fine. Much better than the mobile twitter page. I noticed just a single issue which I can’t resolve. I’m located in germany (UTC+2 at the moment) and all my received tweets seem to be dated with UTC+1 offset. Timezone in my phone is set correctly, but twibble doesn’t seem to adapt it. Any ideas?

22 thilo // May 4, 2008 at 23:29

@Ralf there will be a new twibble mobile soon with twitpic support. Here’s a test with my development version: http://twitter.com/twibble/statuses/803206364 flickr and other photo communities are more difficult to integrate as they use more advanced authentication mechanisms. But let’s see how it will go on!

23 thilo // May 4, 2008 at 23:32

@eske It seems you are using twibble with SSL. Your Sony Ericcson does not trust twitter’s certificate and that’s why you are getting the message. Without SSL it should work (disable SSL in options).

24 thilo // May 4, 2008 at 23:35

@Sven not really I’m afraid … Can you run other Java apps on your phone without problems? Do you have the latest firmware?

25 thilo // May 4, 2008 at 23:38

@Thomas I googled a bit and found that there are some timezone problems with some versions of the 6280. Internally twibble uses UTC which seems to work fine on other phones. Do you have similar problems with other applications/messages on your phone?

26 Thomas // May 5, 2008 at 00:04

No other applications with timezone problems. But ok, that’s not the first problem with the 6280. I’m looking forward for having N95 and less problems soon.

27 Sven // May 12, 2008 at 14:24

@Thilo
Yes, other Java apps (MIDP 2.0) run without problems on the 9300i. Latest firmware is installed.

28 Lu // May 17, 2008 at 19:02

Same here… I can install, but can’t start twibble in my Nokia N70. Other java apps work fine.

29 thilo // May 18, 2008 at 12:57

@Lu @Sven there will be a new twibble mobile soon (still in beta). With a little luck it may work on your phone. Do you want to try it on your phone? If yes send a dm to @twibble. Thanks!

30 Ralf // May 18, 2008 at 13:23

Hello Thilo – I would like to be able to choose the network everytime I twibble – like WLAN this time, 3G that time. If it comes to uploading pictures to Twitpic this seems to be an even more useful feature. If I am right, this seemed to worked with previous Twibble releases. With the latest one however, I am not asked which network to choose, instead Twibble just uses the default one. Thanks for your help in advance, Ralf

31 thilo // May 18, 2008 at 15:34

@Ralf If you want twibble to ask every time it accesses the network you can change the behaviour in the application manager. On my N95 it’s
Applications->Application Manager->twibble->open
(Programme->Progr.Man.->twibble->Öffnen)
and then select “ask every time” in the network settings

32 @kluap // May 19, 2008 at 16:27

33 vinu // May 20, 2008 at 12:59

34 Sven // May 22, 2008 at 13:35

@Thilo: Just to let you know that the V0.6.6 announced this morning does not start on my Nokia 9300i either but with twittai and tweeter (both also Java apps) I found working alternatives in the meantime. Thanks.

35 thilo // May 22, 2008 at 14:32

@Sven I actually have no idea what the problem might be … twibble seems to run fine on recent Nokia n- and e-series devices. There are problems on the 6500 classic and probably some others though. Did you try a fresh install (removing any old installations) on the internal memory? Anyway, I’ll let you know if I find out something!

36 Lu Monte // May 28, 2008 at 16:55

@thilo, I added you on twitter – I’m @lumonte. I’d like do test the beta version, if it’s possible. :)

I just downloaded this app into my Sprint powered BlackBerry® PearlTM 8130 and am pleased to report that it DOES in fact install and run, including GPS functionality. You will get a warning that the software is unsigned but you are allowed to accept the install anyhow. Still learning it. Not quite as pretty as TwitterBerry that I normally use but position awareness is a nice plus.

39 thilo // May 28, 2008 at 19:42

@PaulMonaco great to hear that it runs on your Blackberry, thank you! Are you already using the new version released today (its 0.7.0 in the about dialog)?

46 Tarek // Jul 7, 2008 at 13:51

I haven’t installed it on my phone yet, but let me ask, doesn’t Nokia require the applications to be signed in order to give them access to the GPS functionalities?

47 thilo // Jul 7, 2008 at 18:56

@Tarek twibble is written in J2ME which allows you to use GPS without having signed the app. The user has to confirm access to the location API though.

48 Branedy // Jul 9, 2008 at 14:16

This seems to work Fine with my Nokia 6300 (S40 V3). I just need one on my Palm T/X

49 NJGuy // Jul 14, 2008 at 04:11

I downloaded both the .jad and .jar files directly from the website onto my Nokia E62. Towards the end of the installation I get an error message “Authorization failed”. Why? (I’m on AT&T in the U.S. using “no proxy medianet” data access.)

50 Nick // Jul 20, 2008 at 11:51

I installed the latest build on the Nokia N78 (latest firmware) and I can’t get the username/password to save between sessions. Once I restart the application, those fields are blank. Also, even with those fields filled out correctly, I keep getting “Invalid uname/pwd”. I have logged out from all other twitter accounts as per the instructions. Lastly, it seems like the Menu/Exit options are reversed (choosing “Menu” leads to “Exit” and vice versa).

51 thilo // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:03

@NJGuy, did you install the files over the air via m.twibble.de? It works fine here on the E61 (the E62 is not available here). Do you run the latest firmware? Can you install other Java apps (e.g. Google Mail) on your phone?

52 thilo // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:08

@Nick, hm, sounds strange. From the specs the N78 should behave like a N95 as far as J2ME is concerned. Does it make any difference when you switch on/off SSL? You can also raise the log level to see if there is any information. I assume you are trying twibble 0.7.9?

53 Nick // Jul 20, 2008 at 16:03

@thilo As mentioned over twitter, the only remaining issue with the N78 right now is the reversal of the option button menu items, everything else works great. GPS locationing via Twibble on the N78 works exceptionally well, if anyone else is wondering. Considering that the N78, which runs S60v3.2, will most likely be representative of the new generation of entry level GPS-equipped Nokias, it feels very reassuring that the current build of Twibble works this well on the handset. Someone further up on this feedback list said that they had tried it out on the N96 – which is due next month officially – and since it also runs S60v3.2 it would be interesting to know if the same thing with the menus happened to them. Nevertheless, I am sure this is an easy fix and right now it really doesn’t stop anyone using Twibble on the N78. Keep up the good work!

54 thilo // Jul 20, 2008 at 23:51

@Nick thanks a lot for your feedback. Putting the soft buttons at the right place sounds easy but sometimes it’s not – at least in J2ME. E.g. SonyEricsson puts the Cancel/Exit buttons on the left, Nokia on the right, and Blackberry does it completely different. And when you have 2 displays on your device or a display that rotates in landscape mode things are even worse. Nokia usually puts the Cancel/Exit buttons on the right hand side but on your N78 it seems the other way around. To cut it short we’ll try to compile a new version with a correct button layout for the N78. Thanks again!

55 chukaman // Jul 22, 2008 at 01:51

hey dudes. this app is cool, so much nicer than the dumb twitter widset!! it seems to work perfectly on my N95 v21.0.016. my only real query/suggestion/request is whether or not it would be a mission to turn that exit button into more of a hide button, as i keep quitting the app by mistake :(

I’m not phased about where all the different buttons are located.

56 JC // Jul 25, 2008 at 22:21

I am having a hard time getting this to work on my N95. Installed once and everything gave me a “Invalid uname/pwd” error. Problem is that I can’t find the “Edit settings” option in my menu.

Re-installed, on top of the previous installation, and still having the same problem.

Really excited to use this — can someone please help?!

57 Jo0Lz // Aug 11, 2008 at 15:35

@Chukaman, I would love for the option to make “Exit” be “Hide”, as I also quit the application by mistake…

Also, the option to show user avatars would be cool. If I’m on Wifi, I couldn’t care less about the data :)

@zot @james I’m sorry I cannot tell that much about twibble on a Windows Mobile. Is this any helpful?

63 thilo // Aug 27, 2008 at 18:46

@Jo0Lz yeah, but the other way around if somebody accidentally hits ‘hide’ and things twibble has been closed he might end up with a phone bill of some Euro! As for the avatars there are several issues in additionto bandwidth: Memory consumption and speed. Most people like it without avatars but may be we put an option in in the future.

64 MrTrick // Aug 28, 2008 at 11:55

I cannot seem to get the GPS element of this working on my Nokia E61i. I have a Holux GPS unit connected via Bluetooth, and its got a signal and is working fine with other GPS apps. On Twibble though, despite starting GPS it isn’t picking up any location data. I’ve checked the correct Java component is present for the Location API, so has anyone got any other ideas? Help!

65 MrTrick // Aug 28, 2008 at 12:37

Aha – fixed. For some reason I had an old pairing with my last GPS device and I think that was confusing the system somehow. By deleting that, it then found the right GPS and started working. Woohoo!

Loving the Twibble app and am making great use of it, but I wondered if you could clarify the different options in the “Update Location” section? I’m finding that if I use the “Geocode and Update” option, the GPS seems less accruate than if I use “insert current GPS location” and then hit “Update”. Is there any difference between the two options at all?

I’ve been using Twibble Mobile on my BlackBerry Curve last week; very impressive. Then I installed the update today. Blackberry navigation is better, vibrate feature is a nice addition. It’s already trounced TwitterBerry, as far as I’m concerned.

Two main features I’d like to see. First, it would be good to see visual user pics for each tweet just like Twibble Desktop. Secondly, like the Twibble Destkop, the ability to add/switch between multiple Twitter accounts (I have two). Being logged onto both of my accounts at once would be sweet.

Otherwise, great job!

76 Corinne // Sep 9, 2008 at 03:17

I’m not sure what the navigation changes on the bb were because I don’t see them My only real issues are the menus.

A character countdown would be nice. And I agree with Velanche, seeing the userpics would be good too.

77 thilo // Sep 9, 2008 at 19:06

@MrTrick great you got it running. Actually there shouldn’t be a difference in the accurracy but sometimes the gps ‘jumps’ a bit if the conditions are not that good.

78 thilo // Sep 9, 2008 at 19:08

@John Piercy did you try 0.8.5 from m.twibble.de?

79 thilo // Sep 9, 2008 at 19:09

@dc well, certainly possible but not that easy if you think about all the different phone keyboard layouts around!

80 thilo // Sep 9, 2008 at 19:15

@Velanche thanks! user pics are not yet because of the memory consumption and small screen at some devices. But probably an option to see user pics for the more advanced devices would be great. And a multi account option, too. In any case we’ll revise the keyboard shortcuts!

81 thilo // Sep 9, 2008 at 19:18

@Corinne the menus are slightly different in the latest version. You can get into the main menu just by clicking and then navigate using the right/left keys (or trackball)

Some problems with twibble on Sony Ericsson G900.
I can install application and start it. Can get tweets and everything. But after quiting apllication i cant start it again. When i try to do that, it just doesnt do anything. So it works only first time after downloading.

When trying uninstall it, phone sais that twibble is running (even i quit apllication) and will be stoped before uninstalling. Maybe it doesnt quit properly on G900?

Really nice app, but cant get working :/

Every time I start Twibble on my BB 8310 (ver 4.2.2.170) I get a dialog box asking if I want to allow network access. I’ve tried changing the application permissions with no effect. I already have an APN set-up and other apps (Google Maps, Nav4All, Twitterberry) work fine and do not make the request with the same security permissions. The device firewall is disabled. Also, no matter whether I “Close” or “Exit” the device does not continue running in the background. Has anyone else seen the symptoms?

- Whenever I launch the app, it comes up with a message saying that “the application twibble has attempted to access the network. Would you like to allow this?” It would be nice if it includes a checkbox that, once checked, the app will always remember to allow network access.
- When a tweet has a web address and I enter the main menu and choose “open (in browser),” a dialog box appears saying “the application twibble is attempting to invoke the browser. Would you like to allow this?” Whenever I attempt to roll the trackball, it takes effort for the Yes to appear. Then when I choose “Yes,” another copy of the dialog box appears. It takes about five windows before the browser launches. When I close the browser, the boxes are still in front of the menu window. When I attempt to use the escape key or try choosing “n” for “no,” a new browser window will launch and I’d have to stop it.

I can get around these issues, but it would be nice if these issues can be taken care of. Thanks!

Hi – I’m having the same problems as some others- that twibble only runs once (on a Nokia E71.)
I posted a comment to the 0.85 blog post that I thought it was changing the theme/or other settings.
By playing around, I’ve discovered it’s disabling the auto-check for tweets timer by setting it to 0 – any non-zero value and twibble works fine. Set it to zero, and for me it just stays stuck at a blank screen with no options.
If this happens, just reinstall twibble, and the next time you change the settings, don’t set the auto-update timer to zero ;) .
Hope that helps someone, Julian

87 krishanu // Sep 11, 2008 at 12:13

I have tested it in Sony Ericsson K750i and it works fine. Thanks a lot! :) )

88 kromedome // Sep 11, 2008 at 16:51

@bilhelm96 I have the exact same symptoms with my 8310. I would love to be able to make that dialog box go away. Would also love to have the app active in the background.

89 thilo // Sep 11, 2008 at 17:12

@bilhelm96 @Velanche @kromedome you’re right the dialogs can be annoying particularly when adding a photo to a tweet. You will see lots of confirmation dialogs. The reason is the Java (J2ME) security model. The solution is to sign the midlet which we havent’t done so far. But we’ll in one of the next versions!

90 thilo // Sep 11, 2008 at 17:18

@vaidotas uh that’s strange. It seems to work on other SE models. Do you have the latest firmware? Can you figure out something in the twibble log? You can raise the log level in the options to get more messages.

91 brayjd // Sep 11, 2008 at 17:42

Great software but same as Velanche. Multiple accounts and user pics as per the desktop version would make this even better!
After losing UK SMS updates from Twitter, Twibble has made my life a lot happier!

92 vaidotas // Sep 11, 2008 at 23:34

Hey @thilo,

as JRendell mentionded on his comment, the problem was auto-check timer. When I set it to zero, twibble doesn’t start. I reinstalled application and set timer to 30mins. Now works as charm :)

93 freggeln // Sep 13, 2008 at 22:09

I’m just facing the problem that I can only start the current version 0.85 once on my Nokia E51 after I have installed Twibble. Does someone have the same problem?

94 highstrike // Sep 14, 2008 at 23:49

Can anyone tell me what error; -5120 is about? Worked fine when I first installed it and has been getting progressively worse to the point where it will not show me anything now.

95 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 04:01

@highstrike -5120 is “No response from DNS server” Do you have some network problems?

96 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 04:05

@freggeIn doesn’t start or start but doesn’t display any tweets? Then try to set the timer to something not 0.

98 freggeln // Sep 15, 2008 at 08:17

@thilo Unfortunately it does not show anything of the program except the twibble logo.

I have the same problem as “freggeln” (comment #93). Twibble starts only once on my Sony K800i. Everytime i try to start it again – fails. The only thing that helps is deleting and installing again.

101 eric // Sep 15, 2008 at 14:54

same problem as several others…i can start twibble on my SE G900 only once. if i exit, the program will not load again. the only way to get it back up is to un-install and re-install. and then the same problem starts again.

102 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:04

@freggeIn If you see the twibble logo the app started ok. twibble should fetch tweets automatically if you set “Check every min” to something greater 0. Can you fetch tweets manually (press * or #)? You can also raise the log level to see more logging information.

103 brayjd // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:46

Help please. Twibble will not load any tweets

Phone is a Sony Ericsson K850i. Twibble has been working fine but set the Check Every to 0 before going to bed last night. Tried reload tweets this morning and received the message Error: null.
Tried restarting the software and same problems, so deleted the software and reinstalled but same problem – Error:null

Settings are:-
SSL – Off
Check every – 30
Theme – twibble
Vibrate – Never

Receive message ‘twibble: loading’ when save the options and it tries for about a minute and then I receive message ‘Error: Null’

Other messages from the log are:-

[Info] TwibbbleMIDlet: running on SonyEricssonK850i/R1FA035
[Info] TwibbbleMIDlet: WMAPI available
[Error] TwibbleSettings load: cannot find record store file
[Info] TwibbleSettings load locale: en

Is it possible to download twibble 0.8.3 as the current version seems a bit problematic. Many thanks

107 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:00

@brayjd thank you for your detailed report! Does it make any difference with or without SSL? Can you actually send a tweet? It seems the problem is related to some SE models only as others seem to be working fine. We’ll check.
The 0.8.3 version is still here. It’s probably best to clear existing settings when downgrading.

108 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:04

@stanward maybe your Internet settings are not correct. Here is some info:

109 brayjd // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:44

Thilo, Many apologies. I had actually already turned SSL on which was stopping the tweets from loading. I turned SSL off and everything is now back to normal. Many Thanks

110 eric // Sep 15, 2008 at 20:02

downgrading to 0.8.3 solved my problem on the SE G900.

111 highstrike // Sep 15, 2008 at 23:44

Further to my earlier post and Thilo’s reply, it would seem that I do! Just reset the router and twibble is working again but everything else worked, I retrieved email and used Opera Mini via my N95 during the time twibble would not connect, are there specific settings, ports that I should be looking at to keep twibble happy?

112 Artemio // Sep 15, 2008 at 23:47

I just upgraded to .85, and everything seems fince except for two small details that are not critical. I am using a Nokia E90, latest FW.

It seems that every time that the tweets are fetched via the auto-update the application is sent to the foreground, this wasn’t the case with 0.83.

I love the new feature for vibrating when direct messages or new tweets arrive, but it seems that every time I start up, when set to private messages or responses, it vibrates since it re-detects them. It is not a bug per se, since it is working as expected programatically though.

I’ve also had several cases in which twitpic gives internal server error. I guess this is not twibble related, but started happening around version 0.80

113 stanward // Sep 16, 2008 at 06:57

The link was helpful. Thanks. APN was the problem as mentioned in the link you posted above. Thanks. For future reference, I am using T-Mobile for my service in the USA.

114 Artemio // Sep 16, 2008 at 08:15

I recently updated to 0.85 from 0.83 on a Nokia E90. Everything is working fine, and I like the new features, but I have a few small details to comment that although not critical, they are a bit problematic.

It seems that having auto update enabled makes teh application more to the foreground after fetching new data. If you are in some other app, twibble just pops up, this didn’t happen on 0.83.

The other issue is similar, if you have vibration enabled for direct messages or replies, every time you open the program the phone vibrates if you have any previous ones in your history.

Thanks for this great software.

116 Velanche // Sep 21, 2008 at 11:57

Just wanted to give my two cents about Twibble and what happened tonight after a BlackBerry OS upgrade. I should first say that my carrier is T-Mobile USA, and that my BlackBerry Curve 8320 came with 4.2.x version of the nandheld OS. Upgrading to version 4.5 of the handheld OS, I had to enter the APN in the TCP settings on the handheld to get Twibble to find the network properly (helps to reboot the device after saving the setting). The other thing that resulted from the upgrade was that I no longer experienced the problem with multiple dialog boxes appearing when attempting to open a tweet’s link to a browser. Now it’s just a single dialog box, then aferwards the browser opens. Pretty sweet!

117 Bart // Sep 24, 2008 at 06:01

FYI: N73 in The Netherlands on the T-Mobile network works fine.

118 PumpsAndGloss // Sep 24, 2008 at 20:16

If you are using a BlackBerry from T-Mobile. went into the BlackBerry Options, clicked “Advanced,” scrolled down to “TCP” and typed in wap.voicestream.com for the APN (I left the user name, etc., blank), and now my problem is solve

I’m not a programmer, so maybe I’m asking too much, but would it be possible and maybe relatively easy to release a BrightKite version of Twibble? BK also seems to be more interested in location, too — a “Bribble” might be a good fit and would have no competition.

Any chance to access older versions? Want to find out what’s going wrong with my SGH-E250.
Possible Hint: with Google Maps I had to go back to version 2.0.3 (the non-extended one, getjar short code 36380), later versions didn’t install properly.
Still no clue how to find out about the CLDC version.

206 black_keys // Feb 9, 2009 at 16:34

Addition: Info I picked from the webserver log while accessing using the built-in browser:

“SAMSUNG-SGH-E250/1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Browser/6.2.3.3.c.1.101 (GUI) MMP/2.0″

Opera Mini, in contrast, gives:

“Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13337/608; U; de) Presto/2.2.0″

HTH…

207 black_keys // Feb 9, 2009 at 16:42

I found this: http://stats.getjar.com/device/Samsung/SGH_E250 and it clearly states MIDP 1.0 and 2.0, and CLDC 1.0 and 1.1.
Photo is wrong, so perhaps everything else to be taken with a grain of salt as well?

When I disable SSL, i get no connection when using vodafone live, but if using WLAN, it works. This is strange and it would be great if this could be solved.

210 chris thomas // Feb 10, 2009 at 17:04

Hello! Really like twibble on my Nokia N82. Would like it if Twibble could optionally play a sound file when new tweets arrived, and maybe a different one for direct replies, in addition to optionally vibrating. Also, I’d probably prefer there to be a ‘Hide’ button instead of ‘Exit’ which would make it run in the background by default. Finally, what’s the chance of popping up a ‘1 new Tweet’ message kind of like the ‘1 new message’ popup that is shown when new SMSs arrive? Just a thought! Thanks!

awesome program, but why does the new version post to mobypicture. i prefer twitpic. giving us a choice would be great. thanks for all the effort so far.

After installed and setup the software to my Nokia E65, it shows the message ‘loading tweets …’ ‘(when finished…’… and an error code -36 appear at the top of the status bar, pls. advice what my problem is! Thks. in advance!

286 Argonaut // Apr 26, 2009 at 20:50

Hi!!

excellent app for Symbian! thank you all!!

Just one thing for the new version. You should allow us to choose between twitpic and mobypicture. I understand that there might be agreement, deals etc but you should also consider all the users out there… that they were using twitpic, even with Twibble, before you do the change!

In my opinion this should be an urgent update as twitpic was very popular and not providing a choice can push some users away!

Keep up the excellent work!!

306 Alex Whiteside // May 12, 2009 at 11:47

I’m having some trouble with Twibble on the Nokia N79. In the more recent versions, there are no softkeys. If I press a softkey, I get a menu, listing the possible softkeys, from which I can select a softkey with the d-pad. Pressing any softkey chooses that. So trying to go through the menus takes about eighteen trillion button presses. Also the phone supports JSR-179 but there’s no GPS option in Twibble. And on the very latest version, it just does not load tweets. Sometimes I get my replies, but no DMs or other tweets. If I hit refresh, it just tells me that there are no new DMs. Any idea what’s going on?

307 thilo // May 12, 2009 at 11:56

@Alex Whiteside do you have the latest version 0.9.12? It has keyboard shortcuts for the most important functions, cycling menues and it’s supposed to be very fast. GPS should work, too (Location menu)

308 Steve Davies // May 12, 2009 at 14:06

Trying to use Twibble on a Nokia N85, connecting via Vodafone live! internet. Have entered by correct twitter account details (which work OK on PC/Windows version of Twibble). Whenever I try to download tweets, I get an error message “Error: Invalid JSON” and have not been able to see any tweets at all. Plus (like 306 above) I don’t see any softkey labels, though the keys do both give the option to bring up a menu or hide when pressed. Using 0.9.12 latest version [and N85 software is also most recent, 20.175.53.1 from 6/April/2009].

309 thilo // May 12, 2009 at 14:26

@Steve Davies does it work via WiFi? Pls try “https://twitter.com” at Options->Server API Root to use SSL.

310 Steve Davies // May 12, 2009 at 20:23

@thilo Adding the “https://twitter.com” to the Server API root seems to get rid of the invalid JSON error message, but still no tweets are downloaded. There seems no difference in behaviour between Wi-Fi and cellular internet connection.

311 Pieter Schiks // May 12, 2009 at 21:20

https://twitter.com trick worked on wifi (got tweets), but quite unstable. After restarting twibble kept on exiting (no time to check the log) now it runs again… The firm ware of my n79 is up to date.
Will check to see what happens…

312 Ean Moody // May 13, 2009 at 19:06

Question, can this be programmed to retrieve nearby tweets using the GPS data in other people’s tweets? I have heard of some apps that can do this, and I’m pretty interested in it.

313 Andrew // May 14, 2009 at 07:35

Better touchscreen support would be great.

I have a Samsung instinct and there are no regular keys or softkeys. So I can’t manually refresh and it’s really hard to scroll through tweets. Other than that, WONDERFUL PROGRAM.

314 Johan Aulin // May 14, 2009 at 12:21

I was looking for some kind of suggestion forum on this site, but couldn’t find any. A uservoice page or similar would be cool. I’m not saying users would dictate your every move, but it always feels good to know I can bring suggestions to the developers’ attention.

Anyway, I have a suggestion, which is to allow twibble to automatically scale images down to a selected (or fixed) size before sending them.

Nowadays phone cameras are of pretty high resolution, and I want to keep the full-res pictures. Therefore I don’t want to lower the phone resolution just because I want to post a copy to twitter. This means I have to upload the originals, which results in long upload times and sometimes even broken uploads, if you happen to get into a low-coverage area before the upload is complete.

Thanks for listening.
Johan Aulin

315 Johan Aulin // May 14, 2009 at 15:28

Oh, and I’d also like to suggest the ability to include Mobypicture tags when posting a picture with twibble.

How do you manually update the timelines? I have a Blackberry 8220.

327 Alex Whiteside // May 25, 2009 at 23:29

Current version is behaving itself on my N79 apart from the same control oddities. I can browse the menus thus:

Using either of the softkeys, or the select button in the middle of the d-pad, brings up a list of the two currenty available softkeys (usually “select” and “menu”), from which one can be chosen.

Alternatively pressing the “C” (delete/backspace) key chooses the currently highlighted option, which would normally be the function of the left softkey or the select button in the d-pad.

No key seems to be mapped to “back”.

Are you sure this is how it’s supposed to act on the N79? It’s very confusing.

336 thilo // May 30, 2009 at 12:13

@Smirne76 The latest versions have been signed using a SSL certificate. Your phone needs to have a valid root certificate from http://www.thawte.com/. Not sure if your Motorola has one, may be a firmware upgrade helps. There might be some installation settings on your phone you can tweak, too. If that all doesn’t help you could try to install the jar http://www.twibble.de/sw/mobile/all/twibble.jar directly.

Regaering version 0.9.14 it’s not able to send a tweet containing the character “&” (ampersand) – the message is cut off in front of the ampersand.

And, I really miss a function to delete a message (posting half a tweet is somewhat confusing).

Hi,
twibble is running on my HTC Touch HD with Windows Mobile 6.1. Text of menus is unreadable small, maybe due to the WVGA resolution.
Real problem: I thought Twibble supports sending tweets by SMS but I have not found any option to send SMS!? It is not that much options that I couldn’t find it I think. Has this option vanished?

Peter

Nice app, just a suggestion. When there is a twitpic link in the tweet, it would be good to be able to view it in twibble, rather than having to open a web browser which may mean that the image is displaed incorrectly and so on. Ive seen other java twitter apps that can do this, and this would be a great addition to an already brilliant app :)

Was working fine on my N95 and crashes on the N96
Fresh install on the mass memory or phone memory crashes the app.
The JAVA version is different between N95 (MIDP 2.0, CLDC 1.1) and N96 (MIDP 2.1, CLDC 1.1), is it possible the the issue come from this?
I’d really like twibble to work on the N96.

393 Martin Campbell // Jun 24, 2009 at 12:53

0.9.18 looks good on my SE W910i.

I found a bug (present in both 0.9.17 and 0.9.18):
Links > Search for @username, except for the first @username, i.e. the sender of the tweet, searches for #username (hash instead of at).

I also have a couple of enhancement suggestions:
Add Links > Follow @sender, where @sender is the sender of the tweet. This makes sense because search returns tweets from people I don’t follow.
Add menu entries to jump to top/newest and bottom/oldest tweets. Scrolling through a long list is very boring.

is there a reason the search term is limited to 32 characters? i don’t see such a limitation in the api – the doc says “Queries are limited [to] 140 URL encoded characters”. i frequently use longer search expressions, especially like “search term -spammer1 -spammer2″, so it would be nice to increase this limit.

it would also be nice if searches could be saved, modified, and deleted, directly from search, and kept between application runs, instead of having to resort to the cumbersome and limited template method.

and, as others said before, it would be absolutely marvelous if twibble would support multiple accounts :)

thanks for a great application!

Another vote for multiple accounts support.

But I have a little problem with the newer versions that wasn’t there before. Let’s say I’m in the main stream column and I scroll to the bottom. Scrolling some more will load older tweets. It previous versions, when the older tweets were loaded you could keep scrolling from the same spot. Now Twibble brings you right back to the top and you have to find your place again… annoying to say the least ;)

Otherwise, EXCELLENT job. This app is the fastest BB Twitter client I tried by far. Keep up the good work!

Hi,
looking around for a Twitter app that works with TwitPic on my SE W880i and came across Twibble. Installed 0.9.23. Set it up with all permissions I could. Doing a normal tweet works fine, but I can’t get it to work attaching an image. After selecting an image from the phone file system, the “do” button changes to “twitpic!”, but I cannot see the filename of the file I have selected. When I press “twitpic!”, I get “Oops … Couldn’t write “, I cannot see the rest of the message. Seems like a similar problem that Perry is describing above.
When looking in the log, there are 4 errors:

TwibbleUpdateWorker writeFileData: Couldn’t write to socket

TwibbleUpdateWorker sendHTTPCommand: Couldn’t write to socket

@thilo: Hey thilo, I use a sony erriccson W760i phone and app works great. Keep up the good work. But I have one problem though – I set the refresh rate as once every 5 mins, but even though I have the notification option as ON in the settings(for every new tweet) , I dont seem to get any when the app is minimized. However, when the app is active and i explicitly click ‘*’ its vibrating. But isnt the notification all about letting us know when the app is minimized and we are working on something else? Please let me know if this my phone/settings problem. Thanks!

Wär schön, wenn sich das Problem recht zügig bei mir beseitigen lassen würde. Grüße
