there’s a new twibble mobile (Version 1.1.2) with some oAuth encoding fixes. You’ll get it here.

Finally, there’s a new version of twibble mobile, and it’s free again! And it has some new features including

• support for twitter’s oAuth/xAuth authentication. Basic authentication is no longer supported. Your twitter password will not be stored any more (it is used just once to get the oAuth token)
• retweets are sent via twitter’s retweet api.
• support for twitter’s location api

Why is it free (again)? Well, I am starting a very exciting new job in a couple of weeks. There won’t be much time to support and develop the software. For this reason there won’t be any new versions of the desktop version, too.

the latest release of twibble mobile comes with initial support of twitter’s upcoming geolocation API. E.g. the lat and long parameters in a status update will be used already if you have a GPS phone. However, you won’t see that much as it is still all in beta, i.e. the geo location information is not yet available in the public twitter stream. This release also fixes some bugs.

The use of twibble mobile has always been free of charge since the very first versions about 2 two years ago. However, the development, hosting, support, etc. of the site and the software is expensive in terms of money and time. To cover some of the costs we are offering from now on a free version of twibble mobile which you can activate for a small fee. The free version has all the features of the activated one (incl. Search, Video upload, GPS, twitpic, Mobypicture, etc. ) but is limited to 10 tweets per list. There are no annoying ads eating your bandwidth even in the free version. With your fee you keep the twibble development going! Thank you for your understanding. –thilo

the new twibble desktop with drag-and-drop uploading is available for download! It has

• automatic updates (re-)enabled
• video upload to Mobypicture
• search added to tabs
• bit.ly url shortener

and some bug fixes. You can grab it from the twibble desktop page.

twitter has just announced to add Location to their API. That’s big news as you can add your location to any tweet e.g. when you’re visiting a concert or from an interesting place you’re visiting on vacation. Sure, using twibble you can do all this already. Check out this geocoded picture or this geocoded video. In both cases twibble added the GPS coordinates to the tweet (watch the map on the right). In twibble mobile you can open a map to watch the location of your followers (below the Location submenu).

We are very excited on this since the location features already available in twibble will be even more useful in the future!

This post shows you how easy it is to send videos along with your tweet:

1. record a video with your mobile. A low resolution setting will help to reduce the size.
2. start twibble
3. optional: switch on your GPS if available to show where the video was taken. Wait until twibble shows ‘GPS’ in the title
4. press ’1′ or ‘t’ to open the tweet form and enter your message
5. select ‘Attach file’ from the menu and navigate to the video you just recorded
6. select ‘Moby!’ from the menu

That’s it! This is an example (not quite a block buster but you get the idea). In the map on the right hand side you see where the video was taken. People at home or on the road using an iPhone or other device can instantly watch it!

• there is a new option to set the max number of tweets in a list (default 50)
• more search options in the Joystick/Trackball menu
• some minor wording changes to be more consistent with twitter: mentions (was replies), home (was friends timeline)

as you’ve probably noticed twibble doesn’t receive any tweets from twitter right now. That’s due to a DoS attack against the twitter servers. Check the twitter status page for updates.

In addition to uploading pictures you can also upload videos via twibble mobile. Just select a video in the file selection dialog and send it to Mobypicture. This is an example by fellow twibble user chaosblog. Check out his great post (in German)!
