Trouble with twibble

if you experience some Trouble with Tribbles trouble with twibble this page may help you to get it up and running. In addition you may want to browse the user comments below the posts and download pages.

Generally it’s a good idea to install the latest firmware as some problems could be related to a buggy Java implementation. In particular, on Blackberry upgrading to OS version 4.5 or above may help. To get some more information about what’s going on you can raise the log level in the twibble options dialog.

Q: twibble on my Blackberry doesn’t show any tweets after I entered my correct username and password in the Options. All I get is “invalid tunnel name.”

A: Probably you need to define the APN correctly:

  1. On the main screen of your BlackBerry smartphone select Options
  2. Select Advanced Options
  3. Select TCP

and enter the correct values provided by your carrier. There is also some information on the web, e.g. here and here. Note, your carrier may charge traffic via the APN connection differently.

Q: Every time I start twibble the app ask me to access the network. Can I change that?

A: The J2ME security model requires permissions to use restricted functions on your phone. This includes the network, location and file system apis. Read this post to avoid the confirmation dialogs.
A tip from a twibble user on Blackberry: “In order to make the permissions work on the Blackberry everytime (instead of having to allow it every time you run it) you have to turn on the Firewall.
Do this from:
Options -> Security -> Firewall -> Status: (change from Disabled to Enabled)
Take note that every application that uses the network will prompt you to set a rule now. However, once that’s done, you’ll never hear from them again. Do it once, and all the apps run wonderfully.”

Q: I cannot select a video/picture on my phone

A: Make sure you select a physical drive (root directory). They start with a letter followed by a colon. In the example below c: and e: will work, the others may not on some phones. Also make sure to set the permissions correctly to prevent confirmation dialogs (see above).

Q: I get an ‘invalid SSL certificate’ error on my phone

A: Due to a missing root certificate a few older phones don’t recognize the twibble SSL certificate correctly. A firmware upgrade may help. Otherwise you could switch off SSL in the Options.

Q: I get a ‘rate limit exeeded’ error

This usually happens if you update your tweets too often. If you always get this error try to switch on/off SSL to see if it makes any difference. If you get this error on WiFi only try to re-create your access point.
