twitter announces Location API

twitter has just announced to add Location to their API. That’s big news as you can add your location to any tweet e.g. when you’re visiting a concert or from an interesting place you’re visiting on vacation. Sure, using twibble you can do all this already. Check out this geocoded picture or this geocoded video. In both cases twibble added the GPS coordinates to the tweet (watch the map on the right). In twibble mobile you can open a map to watch the location of your followers (below the Location submenu).

We are very excited on this since the location features already available in twibble will be even more useful in the future!

Persistent searches in twibble mobile

In the latest version of twibble mobile you’ll find a new sub menu ‘Searches’ with your latest search queries. The entries are saved. This way you can easily follow your favorite subjects, users or hash tags on twitter. You can even construct complex search queries using the twitter search API. After performing a search you can go back to your tweets using the left/right keys.

Additionally the menus have slightly changed. When you click the middle joystick button (“Fire”) you’ll get fast access entries to the most important twibble functions (including links in a tweet). The menu soft button has the full menu. Finally twibble 0.9.22 fixes a bug when displaying GPS positions in a tweet.

Parade of the Heroes

BBC created a great mashup using ShoZu, Flickr, Twitter, and twibble to cover the Parade of the Heroes. This is an excellent demonstration how novel mobile technologies may help media companies to cover big sporting events in the future. Ollie Williams from BBC pointed out “… it allows us to tell the story of events in a complex, live, graphic environment for the first time. In the future, mobile technology like this could help us cover big sporting events (for example, Wimbledon or the Open golf) in new ways.”

Similar, Kevin Anderson from the Guardian uses twibble to twitter the latest and greatest from the US elections!

twibble for blackberry

The latest twibble mobile 0.8.3 now runs on Blackberry devices as well. At least if you have a recent device like the 8800 or 8120. It supports all the features like twitpic integration, maps, and even GPS (if you have a fancy GPS enabled BB). Please bear with us if it’s still a bit rough around the edges. Thanks to @mcdent for the testing!

0.8.3 has some other improvements which apply to all devices: @replies and direct messages are displayed in different colors, the main menu has been better organized and should display faster. In addition to the numeric shortcuts there are some keyboard shortcuts for QWERTY keyboards:

[t] opens the tweet dialog
[r] for @reply
[d] for a direct message
space fetches new tweets

And finally due to a new twitter API extension @replies are now properly linked to the related tweet. To install point your phone browser to http://m.twibble.de and follow the instructions.

twibble mobile 0.8.1

We just uploaded twibble mobile version 0.8.1. You can now update your twitter profile location directly from the phone. If you have a GPS phone you can submit your GPS data which can be translated into a address by the twibble server (“reverse geocoded”). It works like this:

start twibble
start GPS and wait until it says GPS in the title
go to ‘Update Profile Location’
select ‘Geocode and update’

If everything works well you should see your location in your twitter profile settings. Of course you can submit your position without using GPS as well.

In addition, twibble now displays locations sent by twitteriffic on the iPhone (those weird looking Strings in an users twitter profile: “iPhone: 53.584930,10.000259″). And finally it should run properly on the Nokia N78 (thanks again @nicksak!).

New twibble mobile

The new twibble mobile is available! With the new version you can tweet photos directly from your mobile device. The photos will be sent to twitpic, a popular service to share twitter photos. You’ll also get a completely revised user interface, support for themes, a filter function to display direct messages and at-replies only, and much more. Some of the new features are described in a previous post.
We’ll need some more time to update the pages on this site but for the impatient you already can get the new version at the link below. It should run fine on recent Nokia N and E series devices. If your mobile supports Java MIDP 2.0/CLDC 1.1 you can give it a try, let us know if it works! To get it running it’s probably best to uninstall any older versions of twibble and then install the new one.
There are few keyboard shortcuts worth mentioning:

0: options dialog
1: send a tweet
2: @-reply to selected screen name
3: direct message to selected screen name
4: toggle between all tweets and dm/@-Messages
5: jump to first tweet
6: page down
7: Mark selected tweet as a favourite
8: Run twibble in the background (Note: twibble may still try to fetch new tweets using your data connection! To shut down twibble always use ‘exit’)
9: Show log (to see more messages raise the log level in the Options dialog)
*: Fetch new tweets (use this to manually update your tweets. Only new tweets will be fetched and inserted to the current list)
#: Reload tweet list (the current tweet list will be cleared and the tweet list from the twitter server will be reloaded)

As always, feedback will be very much appreciated! Send a message to @twibble or leave a comment below. If twibble should behave strangly please check if the twitter is up and running before sending a comment as twitter seems to experience some technical problems in these days.
Please also note, due to the technical problems twitter has lowered the API rate limit. You currently have 30 requests/hour only. Otherwise you may get a “Rate limit exceeded’ error message.
To install open this link in your phone browser and follow the installations steps: http://www.twibble.de/sw/twibble2.jar After installation you’ll find the version number in the about dialog. It should be 0.7.0 or higher.
