Changes in twibble mobile

The use of twibble mobile has always been free of charge since the very first versions about 2 two years ago. However, the development, hosting, support, etc. of the site and the software is expensive in terms of money and time. To cover some of the costs we are offering from now on a free version of twibble mobile which you can activate for a small fee. The free version has all the features of the activated one (incl. Search, Video upload, GPS, twitpic, Mobypicture, etc. ) but is limited to 10 tweets per list. There are no annoying ads eating your bandwidth even in the free version. With your fee you keep the twibble development going! Thank you for your understanding. –thilo

I don’t understand: “but is limited to 10 tweets per list”.
10 tweets per hour? day? week?
what is “per list”?

2 roadrunnerhh // Sep 30, 2009 at 20:09

I would have liked to have that info before the update to twibble 1.0.0 I really like the app but it was pretty annoying today as I updated as I normally do with new versions of twibble available and afterwards I get the Info that the new free version is now limited. I have no problem with paying that couple Euro for such a great app but while I was on the go and I was just getting ready to read some of the tweets that came in during the day and now I can’t see more than 10.
I would have liked that you say that when you update to 1.0.0 that there will be a change and so I would have made that switch to the new version maybe a day later.
Thanks anyway for the great app and all the added functionality over the last year that I used it.

per timeline (friends, mentions, direct messages). Each list (timeline) holds 10 tweets in the free version. If you update a timeline twibble will fetch new tweets but will remove the older ones.

@roadrunnerhh Sorry for that :( The software was finished before the announcement! However, the new version won’t expire anymore!

5 Luiz Souza // Sep 30, 2009 at 20:20

Ah! Understand now… Thanks…
Well.. I’ll have accept this… :(
30 posts per list is more acceptable.. current a see 150 post per list.. hehe

Like roadrunnerhh, I would’ve also appreciated being informed before upgrading.

It’s a great software, but can’t really pay for it, sorry. Was fun using twibble so far. Thanks for that!

So i purchased twibble, but it hasn’t changed to the premium yet. It still gives me the free version.

8 jaronbarends // Oct 1, 2009 at 09:17

I have enjoyed using Twibble, and I fully understand you would like to get paid or at least have your expenses covered.

However, I don’t think you’ve chosen the right strategy for encouraging users to switch to the paid version. As a current user, I’m already frustrated now by the activation message since it’s the first thing I get when interacting with the app. Furthermore, you’re taking away functionality out of the free app instead of adding more functionality to a payed version. Limiting the number of tweets to 10 practically makes the free app useless.

Now I’ve used your app for some time, so I still do consider paying for the full version. Any new users however, won’t have the ability to discover how useful the app is.

Just some advice: I wouldn’t set the limit for the number of tweets, but just let the free app be really basic: read tweets, reply, retweet, view links. that’s it. All fancy stuff (like marking as favorite, follow/unfollow etc) could go in the payed version. Also, you could add functionality to the paid version (like groups, or multiple accounts). Just my 2 cents…

I agree with most of what’s been said already.

You have a great product and I think that Eur 4.90 is a fair price, however, your strategy and execution in moving to paid is awful.

You should have warned loyal users and maybe even offered a discount if they converted early. And you certainly should not just prevent the existing app. from working. As roadrunnerhh said, this is ridiculous for a mobile app. Being in the social mobile arena you should really have done better – I suggest you get a social marketing expert on board to add to your obviously great technical skills.

As a coder, I fully support paying 5€ for what is one of the best Twitter app I ever used (including the desktop clients I tried, functionalitywise). Twibble is great, continue adding feature.

Talking of that, feature request (now that I paid, I can ask for features ;) ): It would be fantastic to have auto complete of user names. i.e. when I type @, propose names, and filter the names as I type (see the client Witty if you don’t understand what I mean, and type @ in a message). I am aware that this is not very easy, but it would be a real help when using Twitter on the go.

Thanks,
Laurent

I paid for the activation this morning… how long does it take to go through?

12 yoedha // Oct 1, 2009 at 13:42

sorry to say, but i prefer to have a previous version. can i use that for now?

13 Jürgen // Oct 1, 2009 at 15:51

Hallo paypal is not working actually any way to get the software without creditcard

14 damed // Oct 1, 2009 at 16:32

Is there any reason not to use competing product? It is less than 2EUR difference and your move showed lack of responsibility for users.

15 LucienBurm // Oct 1, 2009 at 18:40

Like i tweeted: *Never* try to make people buy something while limiting existing features. It will be the last thing you do. There are different models and i think you should rethink you strategy in the realm of location based mobile apps & services. In fact, i think there is more to gain there, then through this buy or die tactic of one app. You might want to revise plans and look for investment as well.

It’s not too late change back. Tell everyone you misjudged and get back on the right track. People love that. Seriously.

Till then and good luck with it,
Lucien

Like @jaronbarends I think you have gravely misunderstood some of the fundamentals of the marketplace. I fully support paying for peoples’ work, and while I think that your price is at the high end of what would be acceptable to most, I’ll probably pay for Twibble as it has evolved into the best Java client bar none.

What would worry me though is the complete disregard you have shown for your users. Moving to v1.0 unannounced, with no extra functionality, was a bad move. If I pay €4.90 for v1.x clients, what is stopping you pulling the same trick in 4 months time and moving to v2.0 with little more than a change of colour, layout or menu structure? Your current demonstration of business ethics and user interaction does not fill me with confidence in this regard.

In summary; let the free client show unlimited tweets as before, but restrict the follow/unfollow & picture uploading to the paid version. This is enough of an incentive to get the people who would pay, pay. It would also demonstrate a greater level of respect for your users.

p.s. If I pay for Twibble I would not expect to have to put up with some of the ‘features’ that Twibble has demonstrated in the past as a free app. Hope you’ve nailed them in v1.0 :)

18 eltimbalino // Oct 2, 2009 at 10:42

Using Nokia N95. My Twibble failed to work today because it was the old version. I installed the new version and then it wouldn’t load tweets. Changed the https to http and back, exited and restarted a few times.

Finally I got it working by changing the update frequency to one minute and it came good. So I set the update back to zero and now I am getting ‘Unhandled exception. Close application?’[Yes][No] when I start twibble. If I select [Yes] then Twibble opens, but shows no Tweets. Shutdown phone and restarted, same error still. Changed it back to 1min refreshs and it is working fine again. Guess I will have to leave it on refresh which uses up my battery a bit but all good. Hope this helps anyone having similar issues.

As for limiting Tweets without warning, this won’t really effect me because I am low traffic, but I agree that it was a faulty marketing move. It is a hard balance trying to limit some aspect of an App to encourage support and still show the App in its best way.

Good luck finding that balance, and don’t forget to listen to your customers, especially the ones that have paid.

I won’t purchase until I use it more or it is less buggy.

I have written a post detailing some more about mistakes I think you have made launching the paid version, and what I would do about it. Hope you’ll find it helpful.

Hey folks out there… as they designer who did the logo for twibble I would love to kick everyone in the butt who is dissing the master of this wonderful piece of software ;-) He did all this hacking for free. He was asked to sell the stuff to some evil big company— but he stood hard as a rock in the storm… but … he needs to look into the future, and he wants to do more fabulous stuff for all your folks out there… and he needs some help. I´ve tried to help whenever and however I could – but – now to speak as a designer not as an artist – creative work needs to be paid! This is the oldest rule of the business.

SO think before you diss around here and ask yourself if their might be a better way to show your opinion to his business modell.

Or … pay me instead! ;-)

23 Michael // Oct 4, 2009 at 22:13

@andré: The problem is not with getting his work paid. I think twibble is worth some money, but I did not know about any of this development. Nobody did! Instead we were hit over the head with an upgrade while on the road, no announcement about the changes and crippled functionality.
Even though someone’s done some great coding and been so honorable as to offer his work for free, users can expect to be treated with respect as well, and they were not.

24 andre // Oct 5, 2009 at 09:45

@ Michael: Even though someone’s done some great coding and been so honorable as to offer his work for free, HE can expect to be treated with respect as well…

by the way… when I do install free software from anywhere in the net i do read the disclaimer. if there´s a hint to something like… “software will expire…” or “beta” I expect some changes in the future. And I have no problem with that. Although i have to admit that i am using some shareware like winrar or totalcommander for nearly ten or more years without paying or register. I simply press the “1,2,3 button” at the start or the “close button” in the please register box… and… I feel not ashamed of it. I just keep wondering about the naivety of that developers and hope they are not sleeping under a bridge because of me.

As with all smart phone software there’s going to be cost involved and that’s a fact. However, how come Apple software is so much cheaper than the Symbian/Windows platforms for mobiles? Strikes me as a mistake to charge over the odds when Apple can do a better job why can’t you? 5euros is a lot for something simple! Please also, give us some info before changing the software and pricing regime. It’s not nice being told you can’t use it without paying up!!

26 Reesys // Oct 5, 2009 at 13:21

Agree with all the above. Rushed out rather than thinking more about it. Anyway, I have paid up as I think it is a great app, 1.0 activated fine, just updated to 1.0.1 and i’m back to the free one, not picked up my activation!

27 thilo // Oct 5, 2009 at 13:30

@Reesys thank you very much for your support! Could you please check if your user name in twibble matches the one you registered. It’s case sensitive! If nothing helps or you want to change your user name pls e-mail support. Thx!

Will the twibble mobile work for the Nokia 5800?

30 Det_Happy // Oct 9, 2009 at 16:14

Wie lange dauert es von der abgeschlossenen Paypal-Zahlung, bis tiwbble auch als Vollversion auf meinen Gerät läuft? Habe twibble schon 5x neu gestartet…

31 thilo // Oct 10, 2009 at 08:42

@Det_Happy should work immediately. Pls check if your user name is correct including the capitals. If nothing helps pls try a fresh install:
-uninstall your current twibble
-install latest Version 1.0.2 from http://m.twibble.de
-enter your user name using exactly the capitals.

Pls e-mail support if you have any questions!

32 baldpom // Oct 11, 2009 at 04:52

I think this software is easily worth euro5, I’ve been a fan for months and months – and I’ve happily paid, but unhappily am still restricted.

Keep up the good work Spider boys

33 baldpom // Oct 11, 2009 at 05:34

okay tried the suggestion from ite, 31 (http://www.twibble.de/2009/09/30/changes-in-twibble-mobile/comment-page-1/#comment-7213) – seems to have worked

34 lies // Oct 11, 2009 at 15:22

Totally agree with all that’s said above… Think it is strange that it’s now restricted though! And from what the website tells me, it’s going to stay restricted even when I pay?

35 Nokia to invest in Twibble? | PitchStorm.tv // Oct 11, 2009 at 20:16

[...] much discussion and disbelief for both this method and the new model (€ 4,90 license fee). Read the comments on twibble’s own post and search Twitter to catch the mood out there. Jarón Barends has summed up the mistakes [...]

36 Matt // Nov 23, 2009 at 12:32

I notice the paid version hasn’t had an upgrade for a while.
I paid for the full version, some features I would like to see:

* Remember the access point in use:
* Don’t set a maximum limit on the number of tweets per list (so I can keep looking back on tweets)
* Store multiple accounts
* Something to show that the downloaded tweets have finished, and by pressing down again will download more tweets
* image preview when selecting images (is there a built in system viewer?)
* integration with the built in send to service for images

It is quite a handy app, but there are a few niggles that I wish had been ironed out before having to pay for it :)

37 thilo // Nov 23, 2009 at 17:40

@Matt, thx for your comments!
* You can set the access point for twibble: http://www.twibble.de/2009/05/23/setup-hints-for-twibble-mobile/ Should work on Nokias
* You can set the max number of tweets per list in the Options dialog. When scrolling down twibble loads older tweets when reaching the last tweet
* there is a image previewer: http://www.twibble.de/2009/05/31/twibbles-new-pic-browser-2/ In the latest version you can also preview pics contained in a tweet. Should work on most phones

38 Mic // Dec 1, 2009 at 19:36

hello! I´ve got the full version of Twibble, but what really annoys me is that it doesn´t have the autocomplete options. Having to type people username´s on a mobile keybord is really pissing me of! C

39 Janine // Dec 2, 2009 at 22:50

Hi,i’ve got the full version too, and like to ask you to create a autocomplete option for the usernames. It’s to hard to type it all time…

40 Aaron // Mar 9, 2010 at 00:20

Hi, nice program but…is there any type of new tweet indicator? I’m on a bb bold 9000. In order to check for new tweets, I have to enter into the program then exit using ‘hide twibble’ or the blackberry alt-tab. Pain! Should I be seeing an indicator on the home screen? Also, why not allow the escape key to exit but keep running (hide)? Thanks!!
