Version 0.8.6 of twibble mobile

Version 0.8.6 of twibble mobile allows you to define text templates you can easily add to a tweet without re-typing. This could be tags (“#web20expoberlin”, “#current”), Locations (“L:San Francisco:”) or any other phrases you use often (“Good Morning Tweethearts, you Princes of Twitter, you Kings of the Web!!!” by courtesy of @PickiHH ;) Should save you a lot of typing on your little tiny phone keyboard.
It also fixes some bugs most notably twibble shouldn’t steal focus any more when running in the background. The joystick left/right buttons are now assigned to page up/down and [8] or [h] puts twibble in background.

Very cool. I assume the “auto-refresh value must not be 0″ bug has been fixed, too?

Thanks for the best mobile Twitter client :)

2 thilo // Oct 7, 2008 at 19:35

thanks! Actually that’s not a bug it’s a feature, really ;) twibble only fetches tweets automatically if auto-refresh is not 0. E.g. if you are abroad with high roaming costs you don’t necessarily want to fetch all tweets before sending a tweet.

thanks for the great updates. however since the last couple of versions i have lots of problems uploading pics to twitpic. i mostly get error messages back like internal server error, sometimes even when upload actully worked out. the whole thing with pics does not run smoothly anymore on my n82.

Doesn’t seem to work on my N96. I get the options screen no problem, can fill this in and ‘save’ it, but then just get a black screen with the twibble logo in the top-right.

If I exit and start twibble again, all my settings have gone and I have to enter my username and password once more.

If you’d like someone to test future twibble releases on an N96 for you, I’d be more than happy to help.

@thilo Well, if autorefresh was set to 0, twibble 0.8.5 wouldn’t even start up for me on the E65. It would hang on a grey screen of death – see http://twitpic.com/dbih – and only the red button would work, nothing else. Also, the only way to fix it was to uninstall (to delete the settings) and reinstall.

@Wrestlevania just a guess: It seems on some newer Nokia models the softkeys are swapped, i.e. you could try to save the options by pressing ‘cancel’ If that’s the case please let me know as I don’t have a N96. I’ll add it to the next version. Thx!

@moeffju should be gone in the all new 0.8.7!

8 thilo // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:58

@Wrestlevania the N96 seems to be a MIDP-2.1 phone. We just uploaded a new version 0.8.7 which may work on the N96.

Does anyone else observe problems with picture uploads? It used to work really well. For the last 3 versions or so, only 1 out of 10 twitpic uploads works right away.

@thilo 0.8.7 works very well. Also seems faster than previous versions. Whee!

I’m running twibble 0.8.7 on a BlackBerry Curve 8830 and for some reason the GPS isn’t working. I go to ‘location’, ‘Start GPS’…and nothing. if I move up or down in my list of tweets, I get kurtgw/no pos. Is there something I’m missing?

Other than that it’s a great client.

12 thilo // Oct 10, 2008 at 13:58

@Kurt if you have good conditions the GPS should get a fix after 1 minute or so. The title should change in your case to kurtgw/GPS. Do you get a GPS fix with other applications on your Curve? You may also want to increase the log level in the twibble Options to see if something goes wrong.

13 Kurt // Oct 12, 2008 at 02:45

A replace and reinstall seems to have done it. It’s working now. Thanks.

14 Velanche // Oct 15, 2008 at 09:57

Hi There:
Are there key commands that will work with the BlackBerry Curve 8320? I have tested some of the keys and it’s hit-or-miss. I’m particularly interested in a page up/down function, as opposed to having to roll the trackball up and down like I’m doing now. Thanks.

Question on the GPS: is it supposed to automatically update? It doesn’t seem to be; I have to stop and restart GPS to get a new position. Not the end of the world, but an auto-refresh for the GPS position would be nice. (Auto-refresh of tweets works just fine.)

16 Tormod Haugen // Oct 23, 2008 at 15:19

I’m running twibble on a Sony Ericsson Z530i. When using direction keys up/down it starts scrolls fast through tweets – only being set in “neutral” if I press left or right.

Using right/left moves to next/previous tweet, but it fails if the current tweet takes more than one screen worth of space – or: it stays at the current if the next tweet aren’t already visible on screen.

Feel free to contact me if I need to clarify. :)

17 thilo // Oct 27, 2008 at 11:34

@Tormod Haugen thx for your hints! On the phones we tested scrolling stops immediately when you release the up/down button. Do you have the latest firmware on your phone?
It seems the pgup/pgdn issues are probably related to the relatively small display of the Z530i. It seems to be smaller than 140 characters ;) Does reducing the font size help?

18 thilo // Oct 27, 2008 at 11:54

@Kurt the GPS updates automatically unless you’re in a tweet dialog. This allows you to ‘save’ the location you are going to tweet about. If your GPS is switched on and you are in the tweet list screen the GPS position will be updated every second.

19 thilo // Oct 27, 2008 at 12:09

@Velanche you probably know the keyboard shortcuts. There’s no pgup/pgdn yet as most people probably use the joystick/wheel. What shortcuts do you think make sense on a qwerty BB? ([u] and [d] are already taken for update and direct message)

20 Tormod Haugen // Nov 14, 2008 at 21:50

@thilo Hi. Yes, I have the latest firmware. No, I can’t reduce fontsize (afaik). This is a normal phone with good java coverage, not a smartphone.

21 Matt // Nov 30, 2008 at 12:15

Hey – it would be really cool if, it was possible to preview photos when appending them to a tweet, and perhaps take a photo through the interface rather than the hassle of taking a photo, navigating to the stored image, guessing which one it is and then uploading. Also, is there anyway to get the application to resize the image before it sends it? My N95 takes pretty big picutures, and I don’t need them to be sent at full size!

Apart from that, a promising twitter client for the N95 :) – i’m using the java client – is there a symbian (S60) based one too?

22 thilo // Nov 30, 2008 at 13:06

@Matt preview should already work an a N95. Du you have the latest firmware? This is how I do twitpic:
1) in the camera settings select a small resolution
2) Start twibble and run it in the background by pressing ’8′
3) start the camera app (open the shutter)
4) take your photo
5) switch back to twibble using the app manager
With both apps running at the same time you can avoid most of the hassle you described. However, twibble can’t resize the photo before sending yet.

Can someone please explain to me how to insert text templates into a message on a BlackBerry. Specifically, I have a Pearl 8130. Thanks

I am running Twibble on my BB Bold 9700. Every time I go to send a tweet it tells me it is unauthorized and I have to go and enter my password again and save it and the minute I leave the option screen my password disappears even tho I asked to save it. What is wrong????
