I don’t understand how to configure it to know what Twitter account I’m using? Or did I miss something? When I try to send a Tweet it sasy ‘Unauthorised’ – how do I set up my account?

the twibble blog!
New twibble mobile
The new twibble mobile is available! With the new version you can tweet photos directly from your mobile device. The photos will be sent to twitpic, a popular service to share twitter photos. You’ll also get a completely revised user interface, support for themes, a filter function to display direct messages and at-replies only, and much more. Some of the new features are described in a previous post.
We’ll need some more time to update the pages on this site but for the impatient you already can get the new version at the link below. It should run fine on recent Nokia N and E series devices. If your mobile supports Java MIDP 2.0/CLDC 1.1 you can give it a try, let us know if it works! To get it running it’s probably best to uninstall any older versions of twibble and then install the new one.
There are few keyboard shortcuts worth mentioning:
- 0: options dialog
- 1: send a tweet
- 2: @-reply to selected screen name
- 3: direct message to selected screen name
- 4: toggle between all tweets and dm/@-Messages
- 5: jump to first tweet
- 6: page down
- 7: Mark selected tweet as a favourite
- 8: Run twibble in the background (Note: twibble may still try to fetch new tweets using your data connection! To shut down twibble always use ‘exit’)
- 9: Show log (to see more messages raise the log level in the Options dialog)
- *: Fetch new tweets (use this to manually update your tweets. Only new tweets will be fetched and inserted to the current list)
- #: Reload tweet list (the current tweet list will be cleared and the tweet list from the twitter server will be reloaded)
As always, feedback will be very much appreciated! Send a message to @twibble or leave a comment below. If twibble should behave strangly please check if the twitter is up and running before sending a comment as twitter seems to experience some technical problems in these days.
Please also note, due to the technical problems twitter has lowered the API rate limit. You currently have 30 requests/hour only. Otherwise you may get a “Rate limit exceeded’ error message.
To install open this link in your phone browser and follow the installations steps: http://www.twibble.de/sw/twibble2.jar After installation you’ll find the version number in the about dialog. It should be 0.7.0 or higher.
Update 02 Jun: You can install the new twibble here. Or use the update dialog if you are already using twibble on your phone.

in the menu go to options and then enter your twitter username and password. That should do the trick, doesn’t it?
3 Moe // May 28, 2008 at 19:04
Generally works fine but I don’t get the dm/@-Messages to load when I hit 4.
4 thilo // May 28, 2008 at 19:13
@Moe direct messages and @-replies are all shown in one sorted list along with the tweets. When you click [4] the list will be filtered – only dm’s and @-replies are shown (in the title there should be a ‘/f’ following your twitter name). Click on [4] again and the the filter will be turned off. The filter function is helpful when you get loads of tweets. To manually update your tweet list click [*]

took a minute to find the good download link
love the new interface
the only problem when i hit menu the app crash right away everytime
mean no setting or other function didn’t try the shortcut yet
i’m on a P1i last firmware
thank for support
6 thilo // May 28, 2008 at 19:38
@DirtySkeMe a crash doesn’t sound too good even with a nicer interface
You could try to click on [0] to get the menu or [9] to see the log. Maybe there is some more information concerning the problem. Did you remove older twibble installations before? twibble should run fine on recent Nokia E or N series. I’ll let you know if I know more about SonyEricsson!
7 DirtySkeMe // May 28, 2008 at 19:54
everything work great with the shortcut
either all the save, clear, cancel or back button work
the only things not working is the menu button
making crash right away
but great work so far just tested one twitpic so far & did work
8 thilo // May 28, 2008 at 22:35
@DirtySkeMe googd to hear that the shortcuts are working. We’ll try to find out what the problem with the menu button is. As for now it sounds a bit strange. Thanks for the report!
9 thilo // May 30, 2008 at 09:24
@DirtySkeME I just tried the new twibble mobile on a SonyEricsson and it seems SE displays the softbuttons differently to Nokia. So when you click on ‘menu’ the app doesn’t crash but just exits normally. What happens when you click on the right soft button in your tweet list? Does the menu display?

I am a blind Symbian user and was excited to find a Symbian Twitter client. Unfortunately, I’m having issues using Twibble with Talks, a Symbian screen reader. I suspect the issue is that Twibble is written in Java. Be that as it may, the older version would read me the first tweet – Talks wouldn’t follow the cursor as I moved down the list, but it looked promising. I’m not technical as you can probably gather by my comment, but if there’s any way to make Twibble “behave” like a regular Symbian app, it might be more accessible. I’m trying to find out if other Java apps work with the Talks screen reader, but my understanding is that although accessibility varies, Java apps *can* work. Feel free to Email me with any questions, or if I can provide additional info — I’d love to see this work for me.
13 thilo // Jun 2, 2008 at 17:56
@Steve thank you for the hints. You are right, twibble mobile is written in Java and thus somehow restricted compared to a native Symbian application. Do you know if other Java apps behave differently, e.g. Google Mail for mobile devices? They also use the low level graphics API like twibble does. Earlier versions of twibble were built on top of the high level API. Maybe the Talk software handle these apps differently.

Been trying this out on the Blackberry 8820. The older version 0.5.x would run OK, had problems posting with it, but would execute no problem. This version errors out on execution with verification error 2916 at offset 8fa3. Is there any known work around for this?
15 thilo // Jun 3, 2008 at 17:10
@Ken there is a special COD for Blackberry: http://www.twibble.de/sw/twibble.cod It works fine on a 8120 Emulator even when posting photos. But … It is not yet signed which might cause some problems when accessing the network and/or file system. It was created using the latest JDE 4.3.0 which might also cause some problems on older devices. Let me know if it works for you! Thanks!

Working well on Nokia E90, gps function is cool. Loving TwitPic integration, nice. Only fault I have found is that the buttons are labelled wrong on internal screen, platform specific issue.
17 thilo // Jun 4, 2008 at 15:12
@Ben Rose, cool, thx! The layout of the softkeys seems always be different across devices. Sometimes the Exit/Button is right (Nokia N series) sometimes left (SE) and sometimes it is completly different (Blackberry, PDA). What screen is wrong? Is it a wrong label or are the softkeys switched?
18 Ben Rose // Jun 4, 2008 at 17:36
The external screen is just fine with clearly labelled “Menu” and “Exit” buttons.
On the internal screen, the buttons are on the right hand side, not the bottom. The lower button is near to “Exit” which would be the correct label. The upper button is near, not immediately adjacent to, the Twibble logo.
These Nokia maps images will give you some idea of the UI http://vowe.net/archives/008575.html
19 Ben Rose // Jun 4, 2008 at 17:39
Getting a few errors on twibble now.
The UI says “Uups … Bad Request” (incidentally, English would be “Oops”)
The phone says “HTTP error – Bad Request”
This has happened a few times doing various different actions. Currently I’m trying to add “thilo” as a friend ;O)
20 Ben Rose // Jun 4, 2008 at 17:41
aha, there is no “thilo” on Twitter…need a better error catch
21 thilo // Jun 4, 2008 at 17:53
@Ben Rose thank you for the hints! I think the problem is when J2ME was specified there were no 2 displays on one device like on the E90. Thats probably why it doesn’t allow you to access the internal and external screens differently. A similar problem for Java apps is to display screens properly when a screen is rotated by 90 degrees (e.g. on a N95). Do you know another Java app using the low level J2ME API like Google Mail mobile? Is it any better?
22 thilo // Jun 4, 2008 at 18:04
@Ben Rose It seems you’re not running the latest twibble. It already should have the Uups corrected (Live is difficult sometimes as English and German have some subtle differences
Adding thilo as a friend is usually a great idea but in the age of twitter et al. I was renamed to twibble
If you experience any errors please set the log level to ‘info’ and check if there is any useful information. Let me know how you get on with it!
23 Ben Rose // Jun 4, 2008 at 18:05
@thilo – In honesty, I usually use proprietary S60 apps designed for E90 so it’s never normally an issue.
I don’t see it being a major issue, the app works well on the external screen…I just like to open the phone to type long messages on the keyboard.
24 Ben Rose // Jun 4, 2008 at 18:07
@22 – I’m running V0.76, I only downloaded and installed for the first time today. Is there newer code?
25 thilo // Jun 4, 2008 at 20:40
@24 there is a 0.7.8 with no more ‘Uups’ (I hope) and slightly different error handling. Also fixes an error when consecutively hitting reload [#] quickly.
26 Ben Rose // Jun 5, 2008 at 10:25
I have 0.7.8 now.
Keep getting a lot of rate limit exceeded messages on this and the previous version. I know this is a twitter thing, but I’m at a loss as to why I’m polling twitter so often.
At this point I’m blaming my othet Twitter software which I have disabled. It was only set to poll once an hour, now it’s disabled.
27 thilo // Jun 5, 2008 at 10:56
twitter has lowered the rate limit to 30 requests/hour per user due to technical problems. I.E. you shouldn’t run multiple twitter clients in parallel as they will quickly exhaust your limit. You should also check if there are other services polling your twitter feed (social thing, facebook, friendfeed, …) and disable them.
28 Ben Rose // Jun 5, 2008 at 11:22
ah, I didn’t think the Facebook service would count in my requests as it’s an official app. Suddenly it becomes clear.
29 Jim // Jul 7, 2008 at 14:14
Hmm, I’m getting “Rate Limit Exceeded” messages when trying to update over 3G but it works fine over WLAN. Any ideas what could cause this?
30 thilo // Jul 7, 2008 at 18:54
@Jim the rate limit should be independent of the network you’re using. Currently the limit is to 20 req/h per user only. Maybe it exceeded right after you switched the network?
31 Jim // Jul 11, 2008 at 12:53
@thilo That’s what I wondered but every time I try a 3G/GPRS connection I get the message but if I switch to WLAN I can update OK, switching back makes it fail again. It’s most puzzling.
32 Steve // Jul 14, 2008 at 19:18
I have the same problem as Jim, rate limit exceeded when using 3G but fine on WLAN. I am definitely not exceeding the current API rate limit. I don’t think that 079 has ever worked for me over 3G.
33 thilo // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:22
@Steve @Jim Strange indeed … I heard about problems with some vodafone life data plans as they restrict network access on some sites. Can you access api.twibble.de via your phone browser using 3G/GRPS? Does it make any difference when switching on/off SSL in twibble? Do you have some sort of proxy in between (“network accelerator” as offered by some carriers)? Does the twibble log have some more information (you can raise the log level in the option dialog)?
34 Jim // Jul 21, 2008 at 23:53
@thilo. Log says: “TwibbleGetThread run HTTP response received: Rate Limit exceeded. Before that I get “TwibbleGetThread run HTTP response received: Bad request”
However, with SSL on it works OK! Have yet to check everything else as I’m just happy I can now update when out of the house!
35 JC // Jul 25, 2008 at 22:22
I am having a hard time getting this to work on my N95. Installed once and everything gave me a “Invalid uname/pwd” error. Problem is that I can’t find the “Edit settings” option in my menu.
Re-installed, on top of the previous installation, and still having the same problem.
Really excited to use this — can someone please help?!
36 marcO // Aug 10, 2008 at 23:01
Great job on twibble mobile. Using it on my n95 8gb. Works like charm, but since some days i only get direct messages on the filterd view. All @ messages for me are missing. any clue how this could happen or how to troubleshoot this?
37 thilo // Aug 11, 2008 at 10:15
@marcO it seems the twitter API sometimes returns invalid JSON output that screws up the clients. E.g they had (have?) a problem if a tweet has been deleted but is still in their caches. Not sure if this is related to your prob, though. There’s a log in twibble mobile, does it have any information (You can raise the log level in the options)?
38 marco // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:14
@thilo: within the log theres nothing that points out something related to invalid response or sumthing like that. for the moment one @ reply is showing, even there are some more visible within the webinterface.
39 thilo // Aug 11, 2008 at 11:25
@marco that’s not necessarily wrong. at start-up twibble fetches a list of at most 30 items: 20 tweets and 10 replies and/or direct messages sorted by date. If the dm’s are newer than the replies you may end up with a few dm’s only.
40 marco // Aug 11, 2008 at 12:03
@thilo: well – the DM’s are older than my ex-wife ^^ – definetly got some more @ messages that are newer …
41 Steve // Aug 14, 2008 at 17:11
@thilo re:rate limit exceeded. Followed your suggestion and turned on SSL and I can now send tweets over 3G. Tried going to api.twibble.de with the browser and had no probs. For the record, I am on three mobile in the UK. No proxies as far as I know. Thanks for the great app!
42 Mike Dent // Aug 22, 2008 at 21:04
It would be great if this app would work for the Blackberry. I’m sure there would be many happy users of it!
I tried it on my Blackberry Curve 8320 on the off chance it would work and it just gives a blank screen after about 20 seconds.
Need to pull the battery to reset then.
Wondering if anybody else has this (or an older version) working on a Blackberry?
thanks
Mike

They support the twitter api…

@H Durer yes, it already works in the lab
but not sure yet about the best way to handle multiple account/servers. this may take some more time.

what can i try please?
46 thilo // Sep 15, 2008 at 04:08
@mummy if twibble doesn’t display any tweets after start-up try to set the timer interval to something not 0.
47 Daryl // Oct 27, 2008 at 01:10
When twibble updates, the new tweets arent on the screen and I have to scroll up to see the new ones. Is there a hotkey that will allow me to jump to the top of the screen?
48 thilo // Oct 27, 2008 at 19:43
@Daryl you can press [5] to jump to the top of the list or you can scroll upwards one by one. That way you always see what’s new

Hey is there a trick to get my laconi.ca server working with twibbler. I dont have much but I would be willing to pay to get that working. Really important!
53 Salim // Apr 23, 2009 at 10:15
I’m getting the “rate limit exceeded” error always when using my GPRS internet access point, but when using WAP or WLAN, it works fine. This happened immediately after I updated to 0.9.8. It was working fine on the previous version with the internet GPRS AP.
Also when I try accessing api.twibble.de using the phone’s web browser over GPRS, I get gateway timeout error, and it opens using WAP or WLAN.
54 Rob // May 24, 2009 at 20:21
I’m having the “rate limit exceeded” message when I connect via 3G but it works fine with wifi (Nokia N95). Using https://www.twitter.com instead seems to work & show tweets.
